Handling our finances can be challenging, especially with all the new places and activities sprouting here and there. Tempting as it may be, we couldn’t just “live in the moment” and take our finances for granted. We should be wise stewards of our financial blessings to truly live life to the fullest.
And where else can we find wisdom about managing our finances, but in the bible! Here are 5 valuable lessons that God teaches us about financial freedom:
1. KNOW THAT EVERYTHING IS FROM GOD
Otherwise, you may say to yourselves, ‘It is my own power and the strength of my own hand that has obtained for me this wealth.’ Remember then, it is the Lord, your God, who gives you the power to acquire wealth, by fulfilling, as he has now done, the covenant which he swore to your fathers. Deuteronomy 8:17, 18
Never forget that everything we have is from God. Yes, even our hard-earned money is from God. We may be the ones working, but the knowledge, skills, and talents we use to earn money all came from God. Recognizing this humbles us and keeps us grounded. Instead of making us powerful, our wealth should make us feel grateful knowing that God blesses us abundantly.
2. LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS
Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Luke 14:28
Sometimes, the root of our financial struggles is in the way we live. Some spend more than what they earn. The key to living within our means is discerning well on our needs and wants. Set a budget to avoid overspending. Plan ahead on how you’ll spend your money. Remember that it is not about how much you earn, but how much you spend.
3. SAVE FOR THE FUTURE
Precious treasure remains in the house of the wise, but the fool consumes it. Proverbs 21:20
Most of us are guilty of “living in the moment” and forgetting about our future. We are young and full of energy, so we take time to enjoy our hard-earned money. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the fruits of our labor, but we must also be responsible with these God-given blessings. More savings means more time to enjoy in the future so don’t burn a hole in your pockets! The secret to saving money? Start by setting aside your savings before setting aside for your expenses. You’ll surely find it easier to save.
4. AVOID DEBT
Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another. Romans 13:8
Avoiding debt goes hand in hand with living within your means. If you live within your financial capacity, then you won’t be in need of more. It’s simple. Don’t buy something you can’t afford. This may be tricky for those with credit cards. It’s easy to just swipe that card without thinking about the financial consequences that follow. So before making that purchase, make sure you can afford to pay on time to avoid incurring additional charges.
Sometimes, emergencies happen and we are left with no other option but to borrow money or apply for loans. In borrowing money, make sure to return the money as soon as you can. Remember that it is only out of their generosity that they let you borrow that money. They might need the money anytime soon. So, return it as soon as you can.
5. GIVE GENEROUSLY
One man is lavish yet grows still richer; another is too sparing, yet is the poorer. Proverbs 11:24
God teaches us that the secret to living a rich life is to give. Most of the time, we are afraid to give because we feel like nothing will be left for us. However, this won’t be the case with God. The more we give, the more we will receive. So when you want to receive more, then you ought to give more.
There are so many ways to share our financial blessings. One of which is through tithing. Tithing teaches us to put God first in everything. God is only asking us 10% and He’s giving us the 90%. What is that little amount compared to all the blessings He has been giving us? A great number of people have already testified that the moment they have become committed in tithing, blessings after blessings were poured out in their lives. God calls us to open our hands in giving, so as we give, He can fill us with His blessings.
God cares about every aspect of our lives including our finances. That’s why He’s given us these bible verses to guide us on our way to financial freedom. Which of the 5 points are you struggling most with? Bring it into prayer. God will surely give you the grace that you need as you desire to live a life free of financial worries.
